Artist on the Frontlines
In April, artist Molly Crabapple and I spoke at the annual International Journalism Festival in Perugia. We had a wide-ranging conversation on her work in conflict zones, but also around the use of AI art apps in publishing. At the end of it, we called on those in the audience and anyone else watching the video to ask their publishers to restrict the use of this technology.
Once home, Molly and the Center for Artistic Inquiry and Reporting wrote an open letter asking that newsrooms restrict AI art. The letter garnered over 3,000 signatures. Some of those that signed included Naomi Klein, V (formerly Eve Ensler), John Cusack, Rula Jebreal, Spencer Ackerman and Sophie Fiennes. Furthermore, the letter got coverage in the LA Times, The Guardian and Artnet. We are going to continue working on this issue in the months to come. So stay tuned!
